In Year 2 there are three classes, Linnet, Woodpecker and Skylark.

Mrs May teaches Linnet Class.

Mrs Birkett teaches Woodpecker Class.

Miss Travis teaches Skylark class.

In Year 2 we are developing as independent learners. We continue to read five times per week, although the books are thicker now and we read chapters, rather than whole books. Also the books are harder to read and we discuss them with our teachers and answer questions about them to help with our understanding of the text.

We learn about a range of writing such as topic work including fact files and we write poems, stories and descriptive writing. Some weeks, we focus on a book or poem such as ‘Overheard on a Saltmarsh’ and ‘Is there a flag on the moon?’ We use our magpie books to take ideas from authors and each other as well as learning about grammar and how we can use it correctly in our speaking and writing.

In maths we learn how to use the four operations – addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and a range of different ways to solve problems using different strategies. We also learn our 2x, 5x and 10x tables.

Over the course of the year we learn to interpret the work of famous artists including Picasso and Mali Morris. History is one of our favourite subjects because we learn about Wonderful Women and Groundbreaking Guys such as Neil Armstrong and Florence Nightingale. We also have themed days such as Space Day and Victorian Day, which is followed with a concert. We do exciting experiments in science and explore the world around us, looking at habitats and properties of materials.
