Year R Curriculum Information
Our curriculum ensures learning is effective, exciting and above all, relevant to the needs of our children.
As a Rights Respecting school our curriculum is underpinned by the Unicef Charter for the Rights of the Child and our School Learning Values of Independence, Resilience, Respect, Creativity, Team-work and Aspiration.
We intend for all of our pupils to secure firm foundations in English and Mathematics and this underpins a growing excellence in other subjects. Our topic-led and knowledge and skills based curriculum offers a broad range of subjects through Early Years and Key Stage One. We believe in bringing learning to life, both indoors and out, with an emphasis on engaging and purposeful learning. We aim to provide trips and visits to improve learning outside the classroom and to create links between learning and fun for our children. We want the learning gained from these to be invaluable and to help our children develop an understanding about the world in which we live. We welcome visitors to school to share their skills and knowledge and to broaden our children's experiences.
All aspects of our curriculum are accessible to all children, irrespective of their ethnic background, gender, disability, religious or linguistic background. We strive hard to meet the needs of those pupils with special educational needs, those with disabilities, those who are more able, those with special gifts and talents and the children who are learning English as an additional language. We provide a rich, challenging curriculum, which stretches all of our children. Staff are aware of children who have exceptional talents and gifts and monitor or track their progress carefully to ensure their academic potential or talent is continually developed.
While importance is placed on children learning core skills of English and Maths, we place a great value on developing the "whole child" through a broad and engaging curriculum. We want our children to be confident individuals who are able to lead safe, happy, healthy and fulfilling lives.

The Early Years Curriculum
Daily activities cover three prime and four specific areas of learning and are taught through topics.
- Personal, Social and Emotional development
This area focuses on helping children to develop a positive sense of themselves and others.
- Communication and Language
This area involves giving children opportunities to experience a rich language environment and to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves.
- Physical Development
This involves providing opportunities for children to be very active and interactive and develop their coordination, control and movement.
- Literacy
This involves encouraging children to link sounds and letters, to begin to read and to write.
- Mathematics
Focuses on numbers, shape, space and measure.
- Understanding the World
Children engage in activities and talk about past and present events in their own lives and in the lives of their family members, make observations about their own environment and about animals and plants.
- Expressive Arts and Design
Children will be able to sing, dance and safely use a variety of materials to experiment with colour, design, and texture.
