Year 2

In Year 2 there are three classes, Linnet, Woodpecker and Skylark.

Mrs Gandy teaches Skylark Class.

Mrs Birkett teaches Woodpecker Class.

Miss Murrells teaches Linnet class.

In Year 2 we are developing as independent learners. We continue to read five times per week, although the books are thicker now and we are beginning to read chapters, rather than whole books. Also the books are harder to read and we discuss them with our teachers and answer questions about them to help with our understanding of the text.

We learn about a range of writing such as topic work including fact files and we write poems, stories and descriptive writing. In our learning journeys we focus on a book or poem such as ‘The Lion and the Mouse’, 'The Storm Whale' or 'Escaping the Titanic'.

In Maths we learn how to use the four operations – addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and a range of different ways to solve problems using different strategies. We also learn our 2x, 5x and 10x tables.

Over the course of the year we learn to interpret the work of famous artists including Jim McDonald, Andy Warhol, Picasso and Mali Morris. History is one of our favourite subjects because we learn about important figures in History such as Neil Armstrong, The Wright Brothers and we compare Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II. In one of our topics we learn all about The Titanic! We do exciting experiments in science and explore the world around us, looking at habitats and properties of materials.

In Geography, we locate the cold and hot regions of the world and learn about the weather, animals and plants in these areas.  We also learn and use geographical vocabulary such as hill, river, ocean and continent.
