Year 1

In Year 1 there are three classes, Puffin, Kingfisher and Heron.

Mrs Quinton teaches Kingfisher Class.

Mrs Payne & Mrs Randall (Maternity Leave) teach Heron Class.

Mrs Marrs teaches Puffin Class.

In Year 1 we work hard on expanding our vocabulary and story writing skills through reading lots of stories including The Lighthouse Keepers Cat and the Owl who was Afraid of the Dark.  We also enjoy reading lots of traditional tales such as Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Three Little Pigs and The Gingerbread man to name just a few.

In Maths we build on our learning from Year R looking at half of shapes, measuring, telling the time and practising addition and subtraction using cups. We then progress onto learning place value (tens and ones) as well as multiplication and division.

Over the course of the year we observe the changing seasons and the impact this has on the weather and trees in our surroundings. We are lucky to have some really exciting topics. Some highlights are becoming “Street Detectives” by exploring our local environment around Kempshott and creating 3D dinosaurs as part of our Dinosaur topic. One of our most exciting times of the school year is watching eggs hatch into chicks during our "On The Farm topic". We also learn about a range of significant individuals such as Louie Braille (inventor of Braille), Georges Seurat (inventor of pointillism) and Mary Anning (discovered the first dinosaur bone).
