The School Site

The entrance barrier will be down between 8.00 and 9.00 in the morning and 3.00 and 3.30 in the afternoon.  There is no additional parking on the school site.  Spaces are for school staff only.

In the interests of safety, please do not park or drop off your child on the yellow zig-zag lines or reverse your car near the school gate.  Please make sure your child does not run ahead as the area around the school becomes very congested at the start of the day.

Medicines

Please ensure that if any prescription medicines need to be taken during the school day, you complete the necessary forms in the school office. Antibiotics may be dispensed to your child, but only if the dosage is four times a day.  If your child has an inhaler for asthma, please obtain a spare inhaler from your doctor so that it may be left at school.   Please ask to check the inhaler regularly to ensure that it is in date.  Medicines must be in date with the pharmacy label clearly showing the name and dosage.

An adult must deliver the medicine to the school office in the morning and collect it in the afternoon.  Children are NOT allowed to collect any medicines themselves.

Please let either the class teacher or the office know if a child is going to be absent for a doctors or dentist appointment – if the child will be arriving during the morning session, please advise the office the day before if they have a school dinner.  Please also confirm this appointment in writing to your child’s class teacher.

If you are taking your child out of school for an appointment, they must be signed out at the school office and therefore the front entrance should be used for this purpose.

Communication between School and Parents

We welcome parents in school, placing a great deal of importance on regular and open discussion with parents and the development of a relationship of mutual trust. In a sense, every school day is an ‘open day’ and the staff welcome discussions with parents whenever convenient.  It has however, been found by experience that it is preferable to make appointments for such meetings.  We also have termly open evenings when parents are able to meet with teachers to discuss their child’s progress.

Newsletters

Throughout the year weekly newsletters are sent home giving as full as possible information about a variety of school activities and events.  We are constantly striving to maintain our eco-friendly school status and use email to communicate newsletters and other information with you through ARBOR, our School Management Information System. Please let the office know if you would prefer to receive a hard copy of our letters.

Remember to keep us updated if you change your contact details!

Books

Children will be allowed to take a library book home.  Please make sure your child’s book is returned on the correct day.  The class teacher will let you know which day your child has library.

All children require a school book bag to take books home.  These can be purchased from the school office.  Please do not put fruit or water bottles in the book bag.  Once your child has settled into school he/she will begin to have reading games, books or activities to share with you at home.  A home-school comments diary will be sent home once your child starts school.  Please make sure that your child has their book bag in school every day.

Encouraging Good Attendance

At Kempshott Infant School, we believe good attendance and a prompt start to the school day are very important in order to make sure that your child gets the education they deserve.  It’s not only the academic work that suffers.  Missing out on the social side of school life – especially at infant school can affect children’s ability to make and keep friendships, a vital part of growing up.  Setting good attendance patterns from an early age will also help your child later on.

Hampshire County Council has a new Code of Conduct for the issuing of fixed penalty notices for non-attendance to which all schools and academies are required to comply.

Please see the following for details:   Attendance guidance for Parents

Unless your child is ill they must attend school.  You can help us by:

  • Telephoning before 9.30 a.m. to let us know if your child is absent and why.
  • If you have to take your child out of school for a medical or dental appointment, where possible, please try to make all routine appointments during the school holidays or out of school hours.
  • If you do have to take your child out of school during term time, even for half a day, you should initially speak to the Head Teacher, then collect and complete a leave of absence form at least 4 weeks in advance.  A reason why the absence cannot be taken during school holidays must be given. Absences can only be authorised by the school in exceptional circumstances.

What is not an acceptable reason…

  • The car not starting.
  • Children staying elsewhere overnight.
  • Oversleeping.
  • Cheaper holiday rates.
  • Sibling being ill.
  • Child refusing to come to school.
  • Not having the car on rainy days.
  • Not having the correct school uniform.
  • Waiting for builders/service people to come.
  • Shopping
  • Someone’s birthday or other celebration.

What happens if my child does not attend school regularly?

Your child’s school is responsible by law for reporting poor attendance to the LEA.

Doors open at 8.35 a.m.   The doors close at 8.45 a.m. promptly for registration. If you are late, please enter the building by the front door and sign your child in.

End of Day Arrangements

School ends at 3.15 p.m.    Please remember that if there is a change to your collection arrangements please contact the school as early as possible during the school day.  At the end of the day children will be handed over to the person responsible for collection.  Please wait at the door by your child’s classroom for him/her. Children will not be allowed out of school at the end of the day until the teacher is able to see this person. For permanent changes to collection arrangements, please remember to update Arbor giving permission for the new contact to collect.  This means that you will not be required to give a password if collection plans change at the last minute.
